Settings like 'screen' and 'subtract':go into the layers pallette; there is a drop-down menu with all the blending modes
Opacity:there is a slider and a textbox underneath the drop-down menu in the layers pallette; use the slider to increase or lower the opacity or enter the percentage into the textbox if you know the percentage you want
You mean, in general? Opacity is how transparent a layer is. If you have one layer and lower the opacity it just looks a bit see-through. If you have, say, a screen layer on top of a normal layer, and lower the opacity of the screen layer the effects of the screen layer are lessened but the image remains opaque.
Curves: the top third of the line in the curves box corresponds to the lighter parts of the layer, the middle third to the midtones and the bottom third to the darker parts.
In the 'value' channel pulling part of the line upwards lightens the corresponding part of the image and pulling it down darkens it.
In the coloured channels the direction you pull the line in affects the colour rather than the darkness/lightness. If you pull the line upwards it increases the amount of the relevant colour in the layer. Pulling it down increases the amount of the opposite colour. The division of the line into lighter areas/midtones/darker areas still applies.
So if you pull up the red channel and pull the top part of the line upwards you'll get more red in the lighter parts of the layer. If you pull the bottom part of the line down you'll get more cyan/less red in the darker parts of the layer.
There's a tutorial HERE complete with images that looks pretty good. It's for photoshop but the principles are applicable. Livejournal's a really good place to find tutorials.

PS7 is a good programme; I've used it before and missed it when I had to transfer to GIMP (I'm stuck with Uni computers at the minute and can't install photoshop). Good look with it.
Thanks! I just downloaded it, but I can't seem to find it in the files. I'll try and download it again in abit. ~ I just had a go at your 2nd tutorial, and I didn't get anywhere -sorry to say D: I got stuck at the part where you fill the second layer in blue XD

Actually... I just sorta messed around with it earlier, and I think you forgot the part where we had to 'colour to alpha' before we added the blue in the other layers XD
I think its that, because when i did colour to alpha, the picture changed to exactly what you said to do Thanks anyway

What's giving you trouble with it? I mean, I know which step, but what is it about that step that's got you stuck?
